Gradski orkestar STOLAC

City Orchestra STOLAC

City Orchestra - Stolac was founded in 1931 by a group of enthusiasts under the name of "City brass orchestra". Since such a step required significant money, expensive instruments were purchased by the voluntary contributions of the population. It is a well-known fact that the most expensive instrument, the tuba (bass) was donated by the mayor of Stolac, a certain Mr. Kovacevic. The orchestra started to practice under the guidance of Kapellmeister Zamola and already in 1934 participated in the festival of Bosnian-Herzegovinian orchestras in Sarajevo, organized by the then "SOKO" enterprise.

From the very beginning of its activity the orchestra has become one of the symbols of the city and was a town’s successful representative throughout the former Yugoslavia. Like it is the case today, the orchestra constituted of musicians all social, age and gender categories. The orchestra operated successfully until the beginning of World War II, when it temporarily stopped its work.

Orkestar se ponovo  aktivirao nakon rata i neko vrijeme pored prvog orkestra u svojim  aktivnostima članovi orkestra su imali jazz band, pop-rock sastave i orkestar narodne muzike.

Orchestra resumed its activities after the war. In this period, for some time, besides the main orchestra members of the orchestra had organized a jazz band, a pop-rock band and orchestra of folk music.

Svoj puni procvat Gradska limena glazba Stolac doživljava nakon 1975. godine, za vrijeme djelovanja kapelnika Ivice Cepaneca, porijeklom Varaždinca, člana Simfonijskog orkestra iz Mostara. Kao i njegovi prethodnici, Cepanec vrlo brzo pored profesionalnog angažmana postaje i pravi Stočanin. Ugradivši sebe u njen rad, dao je nemjerljiv doprinos njenom razvoju, edukaciji ogromnog broja stolačke omladine i izuzetno visokog nivoa kvalitete izvedbe. Ostat će nezaboravno obilježavanje 50-godišnjice rada Gradske limene glazbe (1981. godine) kada je Stolac ugostio desetak limenih glazbi sa preko sedam stotina muzičara.

The City Brass Band Stolac blossom period is considered to be the period after 1975, when the orchestra operated under the Kapellmeister Ivica Cepanec, originally from Varazdin, a member of the Mostar Symphonic Orchestra. Like his predecessors, next to his professional engagement, Cepanec soon becomes a real "Stočanin". Enshrining himself in his work, he gave immeasurable contribution to its development, education of the huge number of Stolac Youth and extremely high level of quality performance. Celebration of the 50 anniversary of the City Brass Orchestra (1981) when the town hosted a dozen of brass bands with over seven hundred musicians will remain an unforgettable event.

Until the war in the former Yugoslavia City brass music Stolac, under the direction of Kapellmeister Ivica Cepanec existed as one of the most important symbols of urban Stolac and unavoidable agent of all cultural events in the city and the wider region. Thus, the City Brass Band Stolac participated in many festivals of brass bands of the former state, where it usually received the most flattering criticism and made brass music an added value to all the beauties of the town.

Nastupali smo u Metkoviću (Hrvatska) – maškare- i Stonu (Hrvatska) – festival "Trumpeta Narenta" Metković (Hrvatska), Herceg Novskim "Danima Mimoze" (Crna Gora), festivalu "Castelon de la Spania" u Španiji.

Unfortunately the last war in the former Yugoslavia caused the closure of activities. Many musicians were evicted from Bosnia and Herzegovina, some have stopped making music and some of them have unfortunately lost their lives.Facilities that we used, and that we have perceived as a home, a meeting place – have after the war changed their purpose, and large possession of quality and expensive instruments was sold to waste as scrap metal. An initiative came from among the old members of the orchestra to reunite the band, animate children and young people and try to at least partially restore the former glory. In April 2006, constitutive Assembly of the Association of Citizens "City Brass Band / music" Stolac was held and the orchestra started with its work. Since Stolac was one of the most war-destructed cities in Bosnia-Herzegovina problem of lack of space was compensated through staying in privately owned premises (AK EL & GO and house of PhD Senad Mehmedbašić) while instruments were collected by friends from Norway, France, Germany, England and many other countries.Under the guidance of Professor Zvonko Knezevic orchestra has become one of the most respected in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region as illustrated by performances in Zenica, Travnik, Mostar, Jajce, Livno, Capljina, Bugojno, Trebinje, receptions for the diplomatic corps in Sarajevo on several occasions at the invitation of the Royal Norwegian Embassy , receptions of the Embassy of Switzerland, Baščaršija Nights, European Heritage Days, Kids Festival, the Sarajevo Film Festival and many other events. We played in Metković (Croatia) - Helloween- and Ston (Croatia) - Festival "Trump Narenta" Metković (Croatia), the Herceg Novi "Days of Mimosa (Montenegro), Festival" Castelon de la Spania "in Spain.Something we consider the crown of our music engagement is the anthem playing before the start of the soccer match for the World Cup in Brazil qualifications between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece, 22.03.2013 at the Bilino polje field in Zenica.

Pored članstva svoj uspijeh u radu orkestar duguje prije svega profesoru Zvonki Kneževiću, AK EL&GO, dr. Senadu Mehmedbašiću, Janu Braathu, Vibeke Anne Lilloe (ambasadorima kraljevine Norveške u BiH), načelniku općine Stolac Gosp. Stjepanu Boškoviću i svima onima dobrim ljudima koji prepoznaju i cijene naš rad.

Federal BiH TV has also made a documentary film on our orchestra. We have repeatedly appeared on BH radio, Radio X - Mostar, DW, while feature stories were publshed in daily newspapers Oslobodjenje, Avaz, Dani, Gracija and Slobodna Bosna.Art world renowned photographer Milomir Kovacevic made an exhibition about our orchestra entitled "Ode de la Jolie" which is repeatedly exhibited in Paris and Stolac.By the Decision of the Municila Counicl, today the orchestra is located downtown in Saric's home, a national cultural monument, which was granted five yearrs period for orchestras use. We gather large number of young people. From the restoration work to date more than hundred members passed through the orchestra, many of who have learned their first tones in the orchestra and who are now students or successful individuals. In addition to its membership, the orchestra owes its success primarily to Professor Zvonko Knežević, AK EL & GO, PhD. Senad Mehmedbasic, Jan Braath, Vibeke Anne Lilloe (Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway), Chair Mr. Mayor. Stjepan Boskovic and all those good people who recognize and appreciate our work. And today, today, we are a collective of about 30 active musicians, of which 12 are under the age of 14 years, and another 10 aged 14 to 18 years. These data show that the continuity of our existence and life in the town of Stolac are unquestionable.
